When I got married and started having babies I totally started making all these plans in my head...
like how many kids we'd have,
how far apart in age they'd be,
how many boys and how many girls we would have,
what their names would be,
and what they'd look like.
We got pregnant with Madden ridiculously easily, and so I thought I would be one of those girls who had the luxury of planning out all her babies exactly the way she wanted.
Its hard letting go of that plan and opening my mind to a completely different plan.
And its hard to make plans for the future for your family when you suddenly feel like you have no idea what your family IS going to look like.
Am I really only going to have one kid?
Will I have another one soon or will it still take us years to come?
Will they seriously be like 10 years apart?
Will we spend so much $ on fertility treatments that we will only be able to afford one more kid?
And will it take us so long to have one more that I will only be able to have one more, and be done at 2 kids because I'll be too old?
I grew up surrounded by siblings.
Randy and I both come from families of 5 kids.
My older sister is only 18 months apart from me.
Randy's older brother is only 15 months apart from him.
I just never intended for there to be this big of an age gap.Madden wants a sibling so bad and when I watch him playing alone sometimes I get hit so hard with this pang of sadness and guilt that I haven't been able to give him a sibling yet.
When Madden was younger, he could play on his own for hours and be fine, but lately its like he HAS to have a playmate.
CONSTANTLY.
And mom and dad aren't good enough all the time.
I try to fill up our week with as many playdates for him as possible, but there are still bound to be hours of the day when he is left to play on his own.
And it makes me sad for him when he is sad about that.
He says things out of nowhere like,
"when I have a baby, I'm gonna share my toys with it, but not my little tiny toys, cuz I don't want him to put them in his mouth and choke"
or
"when I have a baby, if its a nice baby, I will let it feed my fish, but if its not a nice baby then I won't"
At christmas time I even caught him one afternoon balancing on his bathroom stool in front of the tree, moving alllllll the ornaments from the bottom branches to the highest branches he could reach.
When I asked him what he was doing, he said,
"I'm just moving the ornaments up high so when I have a baby it won't get them and put them in its mouth"
Yeah.
Heartbreak city.
I know that even though I'm comparing his childhood to mine and Randy's, its not like Madden knows what he's missing cuz he doesn't know anything different than this.
But it still makes me sad that he is missing out on the experiences that come with growing up with siblings close in age to you.
But it still makes me sad that he is missing out on the experiences that come with growing up with siblings close in age to you.
However, if I was ever going to have to experience infertility, I am extremely thankful that it is secondary infertility.
That I am already a mom.
That I have a constant miniature companion to keep me company and cheer me up when I'm feeling sad.
He makes it all so much easier than it would be if I didn't have him and had to go through this childless.
My heart aches for women who experience infertility without having any children.
I can't even imagine it.
On the sad days, he makes me laugh.
On the days I just wanna stay home in my sweats all day, he gives me a reason to get out of the house.
On the stressful days, he keeps me busy and takes my mind off of things.
And on the really hard days, Madden is the only reason I get out of bed.
Ya know how they say every cloud has a silver lining?
Madden is my silver lining.
And I'm so thankful I get to be his mom.
At first, I was convinced there must be some very specific reason why it wasn't in Heavenly Father's plan for us to have another baby when we wanted one.
I thought maybe we weren't supposed to have another while Randy was still in school because it would be too much of a financial burden.
Maybe my schedule needed to be free to work part-time our last year in Chicago.
Then I thought maybe Heavenly Father knew our cross-country move would be hard and that Randy and I would have to live apart during part of the transition when he started his new job in Az.
And maybe He knew throwing a baby into that mix would've been too much.
Sometimes I even thought, maybe our next kid is going to come with a lot of challenges or we are going to have multiples or something crazy like that so Heavenly Father is spacing my kids out a little more to make it a little easier on me.
I thought of every possible logical reason why this would be His plan for my family.
But lately I just feel like there may not be any reason for this trial other than simply to test my faith.
To humble me and teach me that I am not in control, He is.
That I can make all the plans I want, but He is the one who knows best.
And if that is what I gain from all of this, then I am thankful for this trial and this lesson.
The other day I stumbled upon this quote below:
“Most of my major disappointments have turned out to be blessings in disguise. So whenever anything bad does happen to me, I kind of sit back and feel, well, if I give this enough time, it’ll turn out that this was good, so I shouldn’t worry about it too much.”
I don't even know who said this, but it rang so true to me when I read it and I just loved it.
I'm not saying I am glad this hard thing is happening to me, because no one wants to experience pain and heartache.
But I do believe that when we are tried and tested and going through some of our most bitter trials, it is then that we grow the most, that we feel the most love from our Father in Heaven and that we are able to count our blessings and find joy in the simple things.
I have so much to be thankful for and I do believe that everything works out, eventually, for the better.
Sometimes its just hard to understand when "the better" isn't what we hoped it would be or imagined it would be.
But I do know that Heavenly Father is in control.
That He knows me and knows my family.
That He knows our trials and our heartaches.
And that He does have a plan in store for our family.
And that, in the end, it will be even better than the plan I had planned for myself.
And that, in the end, it will be even better than the plan I had planned for myself.

Wish I could come give you a big ole hug -- or that we could talk the heck out of all of life's crappies on a nice long run...that sounds so nice right now. I'm so sorry you're carrying this burden-- it's sometimes tough for me to imagine that we agreed to endure so much heartache in heaven before we came...but I believe we did and I believe we agreed joyfully and willingly because we knew his plan was and is perfect. I love what you said-- that it is just hard to understand -- and I feel like that is where I am at right now. I personally have found so much peace and comfort coming to that realization -- that sometimes there are things in our lives that don't have a clear reason or way for us to understand all of the whys. It is frustrating because our minds want the reasons now!! But once I've let that go and just said, ok, this is nuts, but I trust you know me and my family and our individual journey, I feel free- like i can breathe again.
Anyway, I know our struggles are different, but I want you to know I have been thinking of you and praying for you and your little family. It's ok to be so sad, you know. But I hope between the tears you can continue to see goodness around you and feel love
Pouring over you -- from others and from God. He definitely is mindful of us, I know know know it. You are wonderful, and I'm so glad to have gotten to know you over the last while. And I love that you shared this -- hang in there through it all. Sending you big hugs, lots of prayers, and a big ole diet coke. xoxo
Ok Tiffany, this post made me actually put down my phone, walk into my office, sit at my computer and pull up your blog so that I could comment. I rarely do that these days. I'm glad you wrote this. It is beautiful and someday you will be so glad you did. You made me cry. I can relate to what you're going through so much. And here I am on the other end of it (kindof) and all I can think to say is that we all have to experience the bitter to know the sweet. And the sweet is the sweetest you can imagine and sweeter than you can imagine. And that the sweet might not even be what you think it's going to be. Who knows but God. But it will come and it will be awesome. In the meantime the bitter is the worst of the worst. And it hurts so much and is so confusing and long and hard. I admire your perspective and I know the things you are learning now will help you so much in your life. Almost everyday I still think about what we went through to get Mack and I can apply things I learned to other things in life now. It makes you stronger and better somehow. There's this talk about the refiners fire that I love. I'll email it to you with a bunch of other stuff that helped me. I have to say that you and Madden are the cutest little couple and he seems like the sweetest boy on earth. These years you have together will always be special to you. I think about you often and hope so much that there's a baby in the NEAR future. XOXOX
Oh lady I'm bawling! I love your perspective on this stinky situation. Every time I see your little quote pins on pinterest I know exactly what you are thinking and feel for you so much. I wish we knew why things are the way they are with things, but you are right--He knows and His way is best, no matter what. I remember waiting and waiting and waiting to get pregnant with Sage. Every negative was torture. I am praying for you and your sweet family every day and sending major baby vibes your way. Love you lots.
Thank you for sharing this. You are a strong woman and a loving mother. Love and hugs to you. xoxo
Thank you for sharing tiff! You are so strong and I can only imagine how you feel. When I had my miscarriages all I kept thinking was " why did we wait so long to try, why did we think having a baby was so easy, yada yada. It's hard not to play the blame game on yourself during these times but its out of your control. I know it will all work out! Lots of prayers coming your way ;) xoxo
Thinking about you. Please call for a play date any time. I promise that Elise isn't always such a crab. =)
Thinking about you since our little conversation the other night. I don't check blogs anymore- much less comment, but going through this similar situation makes me relate to all these emotions you are going through...Just want to give you a big hug!
I was also thinking about you the other night and put your name in the temple. A lot of people did that for me for years. I think it mostly gave me the strength to get through those "dark days."
You are such an inspirational Mother! XXOO
Tiffany, you don't know me and I don't know you but I I found you through ddawgs last post and was touched to tears by this post. Everything you have written is everything I have felt and experienced over the last several years from your comments straight up from first getting married, dreams of a large family, growing up in one and age gaps as well as the ease of the first child's conception and birth. And sadly right up to today only my daughter is now 6 and the heartbreak continues. I am so incredibly sorry to you that you have this trial, there's so many dimensions to it & for a moment while I read your post I felt less like an island, I often feel alone and alienated, because of the grief and loneliness that seems to accompany this trial. I relate also to the intense gratitude you expressed of being a mother regardless & being so blessed in so many other ways too. Your words and the quotes you shared gave me another glimpse of hope ... Something I can always use more of! Thank you & I hope & pray your waiting and yearning for your next kid, and more, is over sooner than later! I can tell what a woman of faith you are and your son and husband are so lucky to have you!
Here's something I cling to in my coping and hoping.
"Some Blessings come soon, some come late, and some don't come until Heaven, but for those who Embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ, They Come." Jeffery R. Holland
Hang in there! And thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings in such an honest heartfelt way!
Thank you for the inspiration, miss. From all of that, it sounds like you have an amazing boy with you now, and I wish you all the best in whatever the plan does end up being for you. Thank you, thank you for this post.
Oh my Tiffany...this post is so inspirational and heartbreaking at the same time. My heart breaks for you and this burden you are going through. When I look at your blog or pics on facebook, I think you might just be the cutest mom I know:) I am sure there is a bigger picture here and that everything is going according to plan. Your faith is inspiring:) I will be praying for you!!! Love ya!
I just want to say how proud I am of you Tiffany, for keeping a clear perspective through your trials, for seeing the blessing that Madden and Randy are to you, for looking for the inspiration and positive thoughts to get you through, and for sharing all that you are feeling so beautifully. I know Madden won't be an only child, just anxious to find out when and how his sibling will arrive. What a lucky child that will be - with a Mom like you and the sweetest big brother. Praying for you always.
What a beautiful post, Tiffany. I'm sending you a big squeeze. You can field digital hugs, yes? xo
B I am totally crying right now and am so proud of you for your faith and testimony. I have had a really hard trial the past few years and even though it is different from your the lessons you are learning are exactly the ones I am. I know Heavenly Father has a plan for you and your family and he loves you even more than you love Madden. He will make all of your suffering up to you. Love you!
